Dormer Windows & Exterior House Shutters
Dormers. Dormer windows are necessary for lighting the rooms in the roof, and if of simple character and grouped together, with odd panels filled in with rough cast, they produce a quiet and pleasing effect. They take the place of gables, but cause the area of the room to be diminished, as they must be set back from the face of the wall as in picture 208 until a height of three feet from the floor has been reached for the window sill.
Shutters. The use of sun shutters has often been carried to excess, as, for example, when placed on the northern facade of a house, for in this position they can never fulfil their duty as a protection against the sun, and thus form an instance of illegitimate striving after exterior effect.
