American Victorian Furniture

Just as in England there is little in the middle of the nineteenth century of which American furniture manufacturers can be proud. American cabinet makers seem to have neglected design and contented themselves with the production of strong articles with much of the American furniture of the Victorian period being inartistic and heavy, too big, and just too ugly.

As in other countries the various styles of the past underwent revivals, there was a Rococo revival, a Gothic revival, among others, as the heritage of the centuries was ransacked in the aid of commercial gain, but without the tempering force of good craftsmanship and sound feeling for design.
