Slat Back Chairs
Contemporary with spindle back chairs were slatback chairs. Again we notice proud turned uprights ending with the same finial ornament. Slats usually numbered three or four and curved backwards to accommodate a person's back. Ash wood was the favourite of the 17th century lathe turners who made these influential chairs. Slat back chairs endured well into the Queen Anne and early Georgian period and beyond, gradually acquiring more decorative features.
