The Montpelier musuem is home to a collection of American furniture and period interiors belonging to the fourth president of the United States, James Madison.

A display of the private bedroom or chamber which Dolley Madison used as a bedroom and as a sitting room for close friends and relatives. The room is decorated in crimson and has a big four poster tester, or canopy, bed.
The main gallery exhibit of Madison and period pieces is presented as a “timeline” of the lives of James Madison (1751 - 1836) and Dolley Madison (1768 - 1849).
Highlights of the exhibition include:
- 1760 drop-leaf dining table
- 1775 cherry slant-top desk
- 1760 walnut corner cupboard, made in Fredericksburg
- 1770 mahogany side chair from Philadelphia
- 1825 walnut bookcase made at Montpelier
- 1800 large wall-mounted mirror
- 1852 hand-hooked rug depicting the Montpelier mansion
