The Winterthur Museum and Country Estate in Delaware, US, is holding a special exhibition on Christmas Period Interiors until January 2, 2006.

The Marlboro Hall Decorated for Christmas.

Called the “Yuletide Tour” the focus of this year’s exhibition has changed from displaying the usual period rooms done up to depict the Christmas traditions of past centuries to one where contemporary forms of Christmas decoration are mixed in with existing rooms and their antiques.

To accomplish the task Winterthur, founded in 1951, contracted an interior designer, Thomas Jayne, of New York. Jayne fished through the museum’s collection of 85,000 odd objects of art and also compiled a list of existing items in each designated room that were to be thrown out.

It seems a doubtful exercise in trying to keep up with the times and is some evidence of the depths museum curators will sink to in attempts to attract new customers.
